Green Beauty Soup

Well, I've fallen madly in love with photography again and as part of my plan to take my skills to the next level, I have committed myself to Project 365. Yep, a photo a day for a whole year. So far I am 26 days in and have already learned so much, especially that I have more to learn than I ever imagined! I'm having a lot of fun with it.

Today's photo was the above, Green Beauty Soup, and I felt that it was worth writing about here. I can't seem to get enough of it, so simple to make, so satisfying, and so full of those leafy greens that make my world go round. Getting a pound of leafy greens (or more) per day into your body is one of our top priorities, we want you to THRIVE!! This is why David is always talking about the "Four Means to Get Your Greens," because getting in that many greens can seem daunting until you realize that you can:

1. JUICE your greens. We all know about green juice.
2. Eat your greens in a beautiful, colorful SALAD. We all know about salad.
3. Blend your greens into a green SMOOTHIE. We all know about green smoothies.
4. Blend your greens into a green SOUP. We all know about green soups.

(If you don't yet know all about these things, Google around and find some recipes to play with. There are so many people blogging about raw food and raw recipes now, and you will be in good company. Learn how to make versions of these things that knock off your socks so that you will be inspired to make more and prosper! You can also check out my favorite raw food books here.)

Yep, simple as that. If you do at least three out of those four, JUICE, SALAD, SMOOTHIE, or SOUP, you'll be getting in close to a pound and probably more of leafy green goodness.

The Four Means to Get Your Greens can be added to any diet, any time, for a wonderful boost to health and vitality. So, if you just finished a cheese burger from Burger King, try starting with a green smoothie every day, and work your way up to having a green smoothie, green juice, cheese burger, and then a green soup :).....I'll be honest, I don't usually do three, but almost every day I have at least two of the four and get in close to a pound of greens because I make my morning smoothies so heavy on the greens, and my soup, salad, or juice so loaded with leafies.

Here is today's version of Green Beauty Soup:

Start with guacamole. Mash two ripe avocados with the juice of one lemon, a generous dash of Celtic Sea Salt, a generous dash of dill, and 4-8 cloves of crushed garlic.

Then, blend in your high-speed blender the following: 1/2 pound spinach. 1/2 pound mixed baby greens. 1 handful of cashews. 1 TBS hemp oil. 1 small head of broccoli. 1-2 cups water. Blend on high until nice and creamy.

Next, pour your blended greens over your bright green guacamole and mix the two together. Add more salt and dill if needed. Garnish with big red pepper pieces to crunch on the side, and sprinkle with hemp hearts and cashews.

Serves two lucky darlings.

I made this as a good-bye lunch for my mom who headed off on the 3 o'clock ferry today, on her way down to California to be with her husband who is working there for the winter. I wasn't crazy about the broccoli, but it was still delicious. Sophia enjoyed sucking on a piece of red pepper while we enjoyed the soup.
YUM!!

In other news, the January Juice Feast sold out (!), and is currently flowing along beautifully with an amazing group of folks. The next group Juice Feast lead by David Rainoshek will be during the Third Annual Global Juice Feast...more information to come on that soon!

Love and leafy greens, Katrina.

2009 Global Juice Feast!!!

Hello All!

It is about that time again! Spring cleaning time!!

The Second Annual Global Juice Feast is set to begin on Saturday, March 7, 2009, so head on over to
www.JuiceFeasting.com and www.GlobalJuiceFeast.com and see what all the fuss is about.

As always with an exciting journey, many just couldn't wait to start and I'm noticing Juice Feasting blogs sprouting up everywhere.

Of note are the resplendent Penni Shelton and Courtney Pool, who are both experienced Juice Feasters we are all lucky to share the journey with. If you are just about to begin your first Feast, you will be in excellent company with these two, so be sure to check in with them.

Courtney Pool
Penni Shelton

Both Penni and Courtney are setting out to do short (although 30ish days isn't really all that short is it?) Feasts this spring, which is a great idea for a second Juice Feast.

David and I like to recommend after doing an extended 30 or 60 or 92 Day Juice Feast that shorter cleanses of 10 to 30 days can be done twice a year (spring and fall) It is important to remember that as with anything, it is possible to over do it with Juice Feasting! Please make sure that you are balancing your cleansing periods with long periods of a nutrient-dense, maintenance diet of good, whole foods, exercise, sunshine and LOVE!!!

While David and I will not be Juice Feasting this year, we will be joining you with our daily quart of GVJ (Green Vegetable Juice!) and popping into both The Green Room (JuiceFeasting.com's membership forums) and Global Juice Feast to see how things are going.

I will not be Juice Feasting due to the beautiful baby growing in my belly, and David having done 10 days in January of Juice Feasting is feeling happy to continue eating after a cold, gray, Canadian winter.

If you have a Juice Feasting Blog you would like mentioned here, please let us know! One lovely lady is already off and running on Day 15 of her Juice Feast, head over and say hello to
Blueberry.

You may also find it fun to peruse some of the blogs listed at the right. I had a lot of fun blogging during the 2008 Global Juice Feast, and that journey starts
HERE.

Also be sure to check out our website at www.JuiceFeasting.com where you can learn all about HOW to Juice Feast under the Juice Feasting Intro!

Wondering about signing up for one of our memberships? David and I were honored by this recent comment left by someone in response to a question on GlobalJuiceFeast.com about the value of a JuiceFeasting.com membership:

"I started my JF membership as the shortest membership term because I wasn't sure about the amount and quality of the information that would be provided. Wow, was I pleasantly surprised. The content is great and is updated fairly regularly. I have recently splurged for the annual membership. Although the downloads can be saved for later viewing (as long as you also save the passwords), it is really nice to be able to follow along and refer back to the JF website as you go... at least for me. In the grand scheme of things, the annual membership is only about the cost of a few weeks of produce for your Juice Feast."
~Mary B.

and this one:

"$30 to begin with are well worth it. There is cool info out for everyday, videos etc. stuff to keep your mind on topic in case you feel urges, esp late at night (I have that prob!). You definitely get a lot of bang for your buck. I did the 92days without membership last year and now realize a lot of questions would have been answered in detail by the daily "wisdom" that the Rainosheks have compiled. The forum is busy with fellow global juice feasters but the member site is just some more extra value.
"
~Lemoned

It rained last night and for much of today! Hooray! I felt better almost immediately with the rain last night, as soon as the dust settled. We talked to our neighbor today too, and she said that a lot of people in town got flu/cold like symptoms from the dust storm. I've never been in a dust storm, and I can say that I am very glad it is over!

Here is a little video my mom and I did on her last day here in AZ with us, me on Day 80, mom on Day 22! Enjoy!

I feel in such deep peace……a truly altered state right now at the sunset of the day. Is this real? I feel very much like a liquid, flowing and free, a part of everything. As though I might just levitate or flow right out of my body and leave my mind and all of its contradictions behind. Such peace.

I will talk to you tomorrow!

We have been getting some beautiful, local produce lately, including arugula!! I love arugula, and always have a nice big bed of it when gardening is part of my life. Fresh arugula salads....mmmmmmm! I am enjoying it in my juices just as much.

I did it again! I actually did not give full disclosure about yesterday’s coffee enema…I COULD NOT hold it all in, and had to let most of it out right away, and then lay there for 15 minutes with some of it. Today, I was able to hold it (after considerable deep breathing through the wave of peristalsis) for the full 15 minutes, and then released what looked like a lot of bile (pardon the graphic nature of this, but it was very orange from the brown and yellow) Hooray!! I feel totally FANTAAAASTIC!!!! There was obviously nothing to fear about coffee enemas, in fact quite to opposite. Your body does not absorb caffeine from the enema the way it does when you drink a cup of joe, so my concern was unfounded, thank goodness or I would not have been able to sleep all night.

David and I sat down to a juicy dinner tonight, just like sitting down for eating a meal, and it was so lovely. We shared stories of what it was like to start eating raw foods, the first raw meals we ate, how much we have learned, and what the whole process was like. We had a good laugh about it all. David’s first consciously raw meal was a plate of cut up carrots, yellow squash, and zucchini, for breakfast!!
I asked “you didn’t have fruit for breakfast?” and he said no, fruit made his stomach hurt too much. He was excited about this breakfast, because it was the first time in three years that he had been able to sit down to eat before noon because his stomach hurt so much all the time from acid reflux. He spent about a week having this breakfast, and salad for lunch and then a cooked dinner. After that week he already felt so much better, he decided to start having a raw dinner too, and started having salad for dinner.

We also got to talk to family and friends up in Victoria on the night of the Victoria Juice Luck. I first of all called via land line, and chatted with my nine year old sister Finn for a while, when all of sudden I was abruptly hung up on. Later they called on Skype, and the story was that she had been stung by a bee, and so hung up on me. She said “we put baking soda on it but it still hurts!” I said “try GARLIC” So my dad chopped some up, Finn spit on it for the enzymes, and they put it on the sting. In less than a minute Finn said “it doesn’t hurt anymore!” just like the book claims, it is fast working stuff. Wonderful. I got to put some book knowledge to the test, and I now know that garlic works for bee stings. Hopefully I won’t have to try it for snake bites, speaking of which I did run into the biggest snake I have ever seen this morning on my walk. A huge, pink rattlesnake, it must have been six feet long and at least two inches around. Luckily it rushed away from me and up a tree. No need for chewed up garlic.

Hope you all have a beautiful Saturday!

With love,

Katrina and David

Global Juice Feast Day 54!

I Still Love Garlic!
Juice Feast Day 54

The Daily Juice Journal:

This morning we made 6 quarts of GVJ with cucumber, celery, spinach, romaine, parsley, carrots, and apple. I also added ginger and garlic to my GVJ. We also made three quarts of orange and pineapple, and one two quarts of grapefruit garlic

DAVID:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS JUICE

KATRINA:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 3 QUARTS FRUIT

TOTAL JUICE: 6 QUARTS JUICE

Added to juices: Vitamineral Green, kelp, flax/DHA oil, bee pollen and maca.

Also taken: Vitalzym, NCD, astragalus root tea, antioxidant extreme, Max Stress B, and water.

Personal Journal:

Oil in my GVJ = BLOATING!!! I will try tomorrow taking my oil away from my juice, and see if that helps.

My energy came back today, and I feel high and happy on juice once again. Oh I am in love with garlic, I can feel it pouring goodness into my body, and at the same time burning off the things no longer needed. Just recently got a little book called The Healing Benefits of Garlic by John Heinerman, who is also the author of The Complete Book of Herbs and Spices, in which he claims that GARLIC is his all time favorite herb. I would have to agree. My immune system and whole body in general feels SO strong when I have lots of garlic in my diet. In this little book about garlic I have learned all kinds of fascinating uses, such as chopping it small, mixing it with saliva (for enzymes) and using it as a poultice for snake bite, scorpion bite, any kind of bug bite, and the sulphur in the garlic bonds or links up with individual molecules of poison and renders them inert before they pass through the liver. A similar process is at work when sulphur compounds come between tow or more chemical food additives and prevent them from linking to form potentially cancer-causing agents within the body! You can also use crushed garlic mixed with honey (to make it stick) and apply it to a tooth with a painful cavity, and the garlic will act as a pain killer and take the pain away! The list goes on and on, and I don’t think I will ever be with out this magical root ever again!

Have a beautiful, spicy, day!!

Global Juice Feast Day 51!

I Love Dandelions!

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2.5 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5.5 QUARTS JUICE

Added to juices: Pure Synergy, kelp, flax/DHA oil and maca.

Also taken: Vitalzym, NCD, burdock root and dandelion leaf tea, chamomile tea, coconut oil, and water.

Personal Journal:

WOW did I ever love the juices today! We added green onion and garlic to our green juice for the first time, and I LOVED it! There is such depth to the flavor, I felt like I was drinking a yummy broth. And you really do have to try apple and yam juice, so smooth and rich, and tastes like pie!

I added oil to my juice for the first time in awhile, and it made me feel quite bloated and yuck. I would like to keep leaving it out accept that my eyes have been so dry in the mornings, and they were doing so well when I was taking the DHA oil. We will see about that.

I also had a cup of really strong burdock and dandelion tea that has left me feeling quite low…more liver cleansing? It was like night and day, I felt wonderful and then had the tea, and it left me feeling actually depressed, in the way that I used to feel when all I wanted to do all day was lie in bed and not move. The difference is that right now I am not depressed, I am just experiencing the emotions. I am so HAPPY that I no longer feel that way!!

Oh the joys of liver cleansing!!! And I am feeling ravenously hungry at the moment…that too will pass though, I know it.

Other than all that, it has been a beautiful peaceful Sunday of working on videos and writing.

Have a beautiful Sunday evening!!

Love!!!!!

Katrina and David

Another juicy day, has it really been over 40 days that this body has existed on juice? I am in awe. I am so in the swing of Juice Feasting, I don’t feel like I am doing anything special or out of the ordinary any more. I drink juice. That is all there is to it.

I got my cycle yesterday as well, and it was SO different than last month when I felt like I was going to eat the whole house or go crazy. This month I have not had any hunger or cravings, and no emotional PMS stuff what so ever!

Here are some fun videos for your juicy enjoyment:

Personal Journal:

We went right from meditation this morning into a Juice Feasting presentation in…. Michigan!! Oh the joys of technology. David set up his presentation on a wall of our bedroom, got on to Skype, and was transported across the airwaves to a Juice Feasting retreat at Ronora where he was then projected onto a wall where he gave his Juice Feasting presentation to 25 people! Amazing. It was a lot of fun for us to visit Michigan, and here are some wonderful comments we got back after the presentation:

David setting up for presenting.
Talking to a group of people in Michigan! Right from the bedroom!

Thanks you guys! We are going to see what we can do to film this presentation and get it up on line soon, it really is an awesome presentation for getting excited about life transformation, health, Juice Feasting and live foods.

In other exciting news, David and I were interviewed for a feature in this month Pear Magazine! Our friend Melissa was the interviewer and she lovingly got some good tidbits out of us. Follow this link for more information. I just checked this issue out, and it was a “finally!” for me as I have been meaning to check out Pear Magazine ever since it first came out…I was not disappointed. The Talifero family was a huge source of inspiration to me when I was first moving to transform my life and eat raw foods, and I continue to be re-inspired by them. We are all so amazingly blessed and lucky to have so many resources at our fingertips at this moment in time, and to have such an amazing on-line community of support with blogs and forums!! I love you all!! It is very, very exciting to me to see the spread of this knowledge, and to know it is just sitting there radiating like a flower ready to be appreciated by all those who are ready to find it and see it!!

Enjoy your day, may it be bright and shining!

With love,

Katrina and David

Global Juice Feasty Day 42!

I Love Cozy Corners!
Juice Feast Day 42

The Daily Juice Journal:

This morning we made 5 quarts of GVJ with the usual stuff (and with celery!! Yum yum) Cucumber, celery, romaine, spinach, kale, cilantro, parsley, carrot, yam, and ginger. We also made four quarts of orange, and pineapple and two quarts of grapefruit garlic. Could you say “creatures of habit?”

DAVID:

2 QUARTS GVJ, 3 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 3 QUARTS FRUIT

TOTAL JUICE: 6 QUARTS JUICE

Added to juices: Spirulina, hemp oil, Flax/DHA oil, kelp granules, Pure Synergy, bee pollen, and maca

Also taken: Vitalzym, Break Stone Tea, coconut oil and water.

Personal Journal:

A day of house cleaning today. While we were in Tucson yesterday we picked up some beautiful pillows for our cozy corner making project. We decided that a futon on the floor with an abundance of pillows suited our little bedroom much better than a couch, as well as being cheaper, not filling our bedroom with a big toxic hunk of foam that will off-gas for years to come, and feeling much more lounge-y and groovy. We also got some more bookshelves for our bedroom because we outgrew what shelf space we had a while ago and there were books EVERYWHERE!! So we spent a good part of yesterday setting up our new house, re-organizing the library, cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, and making wonderful living space improvements. Our home now feels EVEN BETTER!! A good spring cleaning and a little love go a long way for the home cleanse part of a Juice Feast.

We also had a wonderful afternoon visit from Mike Adams and his lovely wife Shea. Mike did an interview with David for his new radio show, which I will post the link for as soon as it is up, and David was able to get an interview from Mike about his experience with juicing. We will be adding that to one of our daily videos soon. FYI we have been filming almost everyday, but have fallen behind on the editing of the daily videos so keep your eyes open for the next installments on Global Juice Feast!! Hopefully by tomorrow we should have a new one up.

C’est tout mon cheri!!

See you on Day 43!

Hug hug, kiss kiss,

Katrina and David

Global Juice Feast Day 41!

I Love Orange Juice!! Cheers!!
Juice Feast Day 41

The Daily Juice Journal:

This morning we made 5 quarts of GVJ with the usual stuff (still no celery ☹) Then, we packed it all on ice in a cooler and headed out along the country road through the grassy, rolling hills and into the city of Tucson! While we were there we got 5 quarts of orange juice, what a treat to have juice made for us!

The girl who made our freshly squeezed orange juice. We brought our own jars!! She was very confused as to why someone would drink juice for 41 Days and longer, but she thought it was totally cool when we explained, and she lit up and wished us luck!!

DAVID:

2.5 QUARTS GVJ, 2.5 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

2.5 QUARTS GVJ, 2.5 QUARTS FRUIT

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

Added to juices: Nothing today!

Also taken: Vitalzym, Break Stone Tea, and water.

Personal Journal:

We went into Tucson almost on a whim today. Around 6:30, after meditation, we decided it might be a good idea, and that we had enough to do to merit going in, so by 8:30 we had our GVJ made and we were on the road!

We started out the day in a café on 4th street, where David talked to all of his students over Skype and we had tea and I read. It was so lovely to be out and about, among the tribe of people, all colorful, eclectic, vibrant, and energetic. I am always struck by the energy of people when I have been hermited away for even a week. The city is full of people energy! It is strong!! It is bright, it is dark, it is reaching all kinds of different levels of all kinds of different developments. Fun fun fun. I have to admit, I really do love cafés. I have been known to work in a café or two (understatement) and I loved working in that people rich environment. Such a dense cross section of people from all different walks! From my sister Finnerty’s favorite song “Because it takes a world of differences to make a difference in our world!!” That’s it baby!

Morning Skype calls and tea at the Epic Cafe.
Tea with David, how could I not smile!!

From the hip little café, where the smells of muffins, cake, sandwiches, and coffee did naught to tempt these Feasters, we went off to do errands for the rest of the day. A truly peaceful day in the city, complete with bumping into old friends and a long visit to the second hand book store where I found several excellent books on medicinal herbs and David scored some Ken Wilber. We also stopped by our favorite Tucson grocery store and got more oranges, pineapple and CELERY!

We go home at 9:30, and went right to bed! So, I am writing this on Day 42.

Love to you all, now I am going to write about Day 42!

Katrina and David

Global Juice Feast Day 39!

I Love Goji Berries!

Juice Feast Day 39

The Daily Juice Journal:

Back to our regular juice line up today! I hope that we aren't too boring as Juice Feasters, always making the same juices! The produce we picked up yesterday is BEAUTIFUL and lush and it couldn’t have been better unless from our own garden. Yes, it must be growing season again. The only thing that is sadly missing is celery, I don’t know why but there was not a head of celery available on the market for the week. We will have to drive in to Nogales if we want it for the week, and we most likely will once we run out of citrus, which will be SOON at the rate we drink it up.

This morning we made 3 quarts GVJ with cucumber, spinach, romaine, parsley, carrot, yam, apple and ginger. We also made two quarts orange, pineapple and grapefruit, two quarts orange, pineapple and goji berry, (just add the dried berries to your juice in the blender, blend, and strain out the berry pulp) and two quarts grapefruit garlic, and one quart watermelon lemon.

DAVID:

1 QUARTS GVJ, 3.5 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 4.5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

2 QUARTS GVJ, 3.5 QUARTS.

TOTAL JUICE: 5.5 QUARTS JUICE

We both meant to drink one more quart of GVJ, but then we stayed over at Courtney and Thim's later than we had thought, so we filled up on good company rather than more juice!

Added to juices: bee pollen, maca, spirulina, flax/DHA oil, hemp oil, kelp granules, and Vitamineral Green

Also taken: Vitalzym, Break Stone Tea, and water.

Rainoshek’s (sometimes) Daily Tips;

Cleaning the Bathroom

How wonderful it is to scrub and clean.
Day by day, the heart and mind grow clearer.

Most of us do not like cleaning the bathroom. But when we work in full awareness of the present moment, we can find purity in each act. To purify means to become clear and calm. Cleaning the bathroom, we clear and purify our environment and ourselves.
In centers for meditation practice, often there is a vase of flowers in every bathroom. Flowers arranged with skill and care remind us that we can live in such a way to clarify and calm our hearts and minds. I hope you will put a vase of flowers in your bathroom at home.

Personal Journal.

Have I mentioned yet that I cut all of David’s hair off the other day? You have most likely seen it on the daily videos. So crisp and clean. After I did it, he was so ecstatic, loving every breath of wind, the falling shower water, my touch, the sunshine, all on his scalp. I wanted to shave my head too! I could feel my head asking to be naked, it cried out, “I want to feel the water drops, the wind, let me out of this eternal blanket of hair!!” (I have had long hair my whole life, the shortest being just below my shoulders) I felt emotionally it was the next step to letting go of my ego, my attachment to the way this body looks and how people react to it.

A good experiment in thinking.

I decided in the end to keep my hair. Perhaps at another time. I am still working on the release of ego and attachment though.

Michelle made an interesting point that I have been thinking a lot about, even before I read it. (I love this about the blogging community, that we can all discover aspects of our development and thoughts there in our friend’s words!) She wrote that weight loss, despite what it looks like, is a deeply spiritual practice. I whole heartedly agree, when weight loss is healthy, it most certainly is spiritual. When weight loss happens as a positive side affect of health, it is most certainly spiritual. It is respecting with great love the sacred body that we have been given to care for. It is enjoying the gift of physical strength, pleasure, enjoyments, and fitness. It is honoring the mother and father who brought us to life, including the Eternal Mother and Father. It is loving the planet and being gracious for all of its gifts. It is wanting to give back by creating beauty wherever we are simply by being a happy, healthy person. It is deep self love, and this always goes hand and hand for deep love of every being and thing.

Ken Wilber would agree too, as he says that weight lifting can be spiritual as well. I agree, as I believe to feel healthy and strong is a manifestation of our respect for the Divine Blueprint.

In One Taste, Ken mentions a book called the Body Project by Joan Brumberg, which tracks girls and their bodies over the last two centuries. A typical entry in the late eighteen hundreds ran: “To work seriously. To be dignified. Interest myself in others.” A typical entry today reads: “I will loose weight. Get new lenses, good makeup, new clothes, and accessories.” Brumberg comments “Before the twentieth century, girls simply did not organize their thinking around their bodies. Today they believe that the body is the ultimate expression of the self.”

I found this very interesting. What I see happening though, is that when women move beyond the body as an ultimate expression of self, their self knowledge and wisdom runs very deep. It has been, un-doubt-ably, a movement towards releasing ego and moving into a deeper awareness of Self. After all, we create and maintain a healthy body so that we can best create the loving work we are here to do!

I realize once again, the work on self begins anew with every moment!

We just ordered a bunch of books, and I am looking forward to reading A Woman’s Worth, and When Food is Love: Exploring the Relationship Between Eating and Intimacy, recommended by my friend Courtney, among many others. Although I am generally very happy with the way I eat, I am still wanting to focus on getting in touch with what happens when I eat for emotional reasons, which I still do quite often. I believe that yes, eating can be a deeply emotional and satisfying event, but it need not be a band-aid for something painful, troublesome, or irritating.

I just read a wonderful bit from Loving What Is by Byron Katie about these uncomfortable feelings that often lead us to eating when not hungry:

It is easy to be swept away by some overwhelming feeling, so it’s helpful to remember that any stressful feeling is like a compassionate alarm clock that says, “You’re caught in the dream.”
Depression, pain, and fear are gifts that say, “Sweet heart, take a look at what you’re thinking right now. You’re living in a story that isn’t true for you.”

She also points out “I have never experienced a stressful feeling that wasn’t caused by attaching to an untrue thought. Behind every uncomfortable feeling, there is a thought that isn’t true for us. “The wind shouldn’t be blowing” “My husband should agree with me” “I am too fat” We have a thought that argues with reality, then we have a stressful feeling.”

I know whenever I inquire into my unpleasant feelings, this is always true! And often the thought contains the word “want” or “should” One of the most common, stressful thoughts to enter my head and often goes unnoticed until I am feeling really sad is “I want to go home.” I seem to fall into thinking this, like a mantra, whenever I am frustrated, confused, overwhelmed, or sad. I have begun to pay very close attention to whenever this phrase pops into my head, and instead I feel “I am home.”

We have faithfully been getting up at 4:45 am to meditate! This means that meditation, morning cuddles, and juice making are all done by around 7:30 or 8, leaving lots of time for some exercise before David’s first consultation. This morning we did the full Bikram’s yoga session, yesterday we went on a long, early morning walk. I LOVE this schedule! This really was one of my main goals of Juice Feasting, to get into a regular meditation and exercise routine. Happy, happy, happy Katrina.

We spent the evening visiting with the lovely Courtney and Thim. We went over to look at a couch that they have for sale, and ended up staying until bedtime, we all had so much to talk about! I love those two, kiss kiss, hug hug.

That's all for today folks! See you on Day 40!!

Love, kiss kiss, hug hug,

Added to juices: MSM, bee pollen, Vitamineral Green, maca, Flax/DHA oil, hemp oil, spirulina, and Kelp Granules.

Also taken: Vitalzym, MSM, Break Stone Tea, and water.

Personal Journal:

I was a juice monster again today! 6 quarts was not quite enough, and I fully enjoyed the spicy lemonade AKA Master Cleanser.

Another busy work day, but we did make time to sit in the sun and read. Such a treat. One of the books I am reading right now is Grace and Grit by Ken Wilber, a truly heart opening book about the story of the life and death of his soul mate Treya. David suggested that perhaps I wait until AFTER the intensity of the Juice Feast to read this book, but I was magnetized to it and find Treya in my dreams now. If you know someone with cancer, please read this book. If you know someone who is dying, please read this book. If you want to embrace the fact that you too will someday die, please read this book.

We began our commitment to get up at five in the mornings to meditate this morning, and that felt really good. I love being up for the sunrise, watching the movement of the day. Circadian rhythms are best joined in on for this girl, I really do feel out of sync when I don’t follow along with the sunshine by staying up late and sleeping in.

Have a beautiful Sunday!

LOVE!! YOUR JUICE!!!

Your Questions:

Greetings David and Katrina,
Thank you for being on this journey with us. I am so looking forward to the book The Four Means To Get Your Greens. Eating post Juice Feasting is important to me. I had a rough time limiting the nuts seeds and avocados on my 100% raw lifestyle before the Juice Feast. I was wondering about making spinach flax crackers. Will they present a bread addiction problem as you mentioned in the video on carbohydrates? I had just purchased a dehydrator to make my own green powders and I wanted to make green crackers with the powders also.

Blessings,
Tuliza

We Say:

Tuliza,
Thank YOU!! The most common thing for people new to a raw food diet is exactly what you experienced, difficulty with not over-eating the fats!

Until we become re-nourished by all the amazing live foods, and get used to the lighter feelings of live food, we often crave the heavy, cooked food feelings that nuts and avocados will give us if we over eat them. Lots of greens will be very important.

In my experience as a recovered bread addict, flax crackers do not present any problem. It is the wheat that is really the cause of the addictive nature of bread, and as long as you stay away from wheat products, you won’t find yourself falling back in to bread chaos! Remember that wheat contains 17 different opiates!

My testimony of overcoming bread with raw foods:

Before going raw I was working part time in a Viennese Bakery and Cafe, where the most amazing baked goods were all too easy to come by. Not only did I snack at work, but I was sent home at the end of the day with some of the un-sold wares, Mille-Filles, baguettes, sourdough bread, white cloud fluffy you feel high when you eat it bread with a chewy crust and creamy body, multigrain bread, croissants, brownies, hedgehog buns, cinnamon shenekes (like a cinnamon bun but made with croissant dough), lemon tarts, lemon Coppenhagens, seven layer cream cakes, fruit pies, YOU NAME IT!! Not only was my boss a true artist of Viennese fine baking, but she used only butter from New Zealand which has 50% more fat than Canadian butter, because it made the food taste better. The daily soup was made with not just cream, but whipping cream! You can imagine the taste sensations that that place created.

I learned a lot while working there about the addictive nature of un-healthy foods. I was my own best test subject, but I also witnessed people throwing fits when we ran out of their favorite bread, or slumping with depression when we didn’t have cinnamon shenekes left at the end of the day. I also saw people go into strange fits of ecstasy with their first bite of a chocolate hazelnut cream cake, women claimed that the Mille-Fille was better than sex, and people literally squirmed with delight over the baguettes, saying that their toes curled in pleasure!! Wow. People would look at me, even in the state I was in, and ask “how do you manage to stay so slim and work here? I would be 300 lbs if I worked here!” And indeed many of the customers were close to that weight! Talk about food porn!

Needless to say, this is also when many of my worst health issues came to life. I became a sugar/carb addict! I was also working seven hour shifts there as a waitress, serving lunch, and did not get a break to sit down to lunch. I would ride my bike to work too, so you can imagine by the middle of my shift I would be crazy hungry, serving and smelling all that food, running around on my feet, grabbing a bite here and there titillating my taste buds to want even more. I also became so hypoglycemic that I would feel dizzy, shaky, and pissy around 3:00 until I ate a brownie, and then I would feel good again. To make a long, boring story short (sorry if it has gotten too long already), health wise things got worse and worse for me when I finally decided the only way to go for me was RAW!! I managed to go 3 months raw while still working there! (pat myself on the back)

It took me about a year of mostly raw foods to get over bread, to the point where I didn’t think about it constantly, crave it, and have it annoy me. The funny thing was that bread also made me feel sick, leading me to believe I am actually allergic to wheat. I grew up with a mother who made all the family’s bread with hand ground, whole wheat, and I never had a problem with bread before I started eating the white stuff. I have now been bread craving free for over a year, and I can honestly say that I don’t miss it for one second, it was not a nice friendship. I will do my best to never eat wheat again!! Phew.

If I could do it working under such breadish conditions, after growing up with such wonderful bread memories of my beautiful mother leaning over a warm oven, her blond hair lifted by the heat rising out as she removed the tins of fresh, homemade bread to soon be sliced up and spread with butter and homemade blackberry jam, than I think anyone can happily give up bread once they understand what a ill suited food wheat is for our human bodies! I just hope my story will inspire others to have hope for a bread free life, it is possible ☺

Here is some more info on grains:

Grains contain Gluten. According to David Wolfe in his book, Eating for Beauty: "Many cereal grain seeds (such as wheat berries) are so hybridized that they contain too much gluten. Gluten is an irritating inflammatory substance that can actually burn the sensitive lining of the intestines. Products made from wheat seeds (bread, pasta) can actually cause our face to become puffy. These products, like other starchy carbohydrates (baked potato), tend to make our skin pale and pasty in appearance.

Next, we find good information on grains from Dr. Gabriel Cousens in Rainbow Green Live Food Cuisine: "Grains constitute the next class of yeast/fungi/mold-stimulating foods after the high-sugar foods and fruits in particular. Research shows that stored grains ferment in 90 days. Within that time many mycotoxins are produced. In essence, stored grains are a mycotoxic hazard. A correlation was found between 112 patients with esophageal cancer and eating of stored grains (Cancer, 1987). There was a particular risk factor for stomach cancer among Scandinavian and German men eating stored grains reported in The Fungal/Mycotoxin Etiology of Human Disease, vol. 2. Stored potatoes also represent a mycotoxic risk. The black spots on them are caused by the fungi aspergillus and fusarium, which produce the mycotoxins aflatoxin and fumosium.

After the Juice Feast you should be mostly free from thoughts of bread, so try to keep it that way by choosing the best foods possible!!

Another Question:

David and Katrina

My protein levels are sinking really very, very low -- to the point of starting to make my medical caregivers worry (and in turn this is making my white blood cell count and platelet counts go down). None of them asked me to stop juicing to their credit, but they were encouraging me to introduce eggs. As I don't want to, but my health situation is precarious), what do you think of the option of me supplementing with a protein powder -- maybe hemp? This was the compromise I came up with...what are your thoughts and suggestions?

Thanks guys, love Bronwyn

We Say:

Hi Bronwyn!

It is more than likely that your protein looks low because most medical testing is using a society that over eats protein as their baseline for judging protein levels. Most westerners are getting about 60-70 grams of protein a day, which skews the numbers for those of us eating a plant based diet. Just like the weight charts. Our research shows that 20-30 grams of protein is plenty! Our honest opinion is that too much protein is far more of a problem than too little. Please see the Day 28 video if you haven't yet seen it for more info on protein, or Day 28 on JuiceFeasting.com!! Loads of info there.

BUT!! If you really want to add in more protein, things to consider rather than eggs (keep it vegan darling!) for your Juice Feast are:

1.More dark, leafy greens
2. bee pollen
3. Chlorella, Spirulina, or E3live (65% protein)
4. Maca root powder
5. Goji berries (blend soaked gojis into your juice, and then strain out the pulp.)
6. If you really want to add protein powder, we would recommend a hemp protein powder. There are some really good ones you can find at Lifestyles Market in Victoria, and possible Thrifty's has them too.

If you add in more of all these things and are still protein deficient, than you may have a HCl (stomach acid) deficiency, leading to poor absorption. Let us know what your next tests look like!

Lots of love!!

Personal Journal:

Happy today. Lots of stuff manifesting in the realm of personal growth. I love Juice Feasting. I got a wonderful amount of exercise yesterday, and am feeling all aglow from it today. I went for two half hour walks, rebounded for 20 minutes, and did the 90 minute Bikram's yoga session. I have the 2 CD audio set of Bikram teaching the class, which you can find on Amazon, and I really enjoy it. I LOVE sweating, and don't know that I have ever sweated so much as I do doing Bikram's yoga. If you are interested in getting the CD and doing it at home, I would recommend going to a few live classes as well to get started and become familiar with the poses. I was doing Bikram before I came to AZ, and WOW did it ever help me in the emotional turmoil of leaving my life "before David" behind! I can remember crying my way silently through some of the most heart opening postures, and then leaving the class feeling so at peace! Yoga truly can be the marriage between body, heart, mind, and spirit.

Love to you all the cosmic 33rd day!!

Global Juice Feast Day Twenty Nine!

I Love Spinach!!

Juice Feast Day 29

The Daily Juice Journal:

This morning we got up and made six quarts of GVJ with cilantro, parsley, cucumber, celery, bok choy, romaine, red leaf lettuce, carrot and ginger. We also made two quarts of orange and pineapple, and two quarts of orange, watermelon, lemon and cherry! You should see the color of this baby!

DAVID:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

KATRINA:

3 QUARTS GVJ, 2 QUARTS FRUIT.

TOTAL JUICE: 5 QUARTS

Added to juices: MSM, bee pollen, Vitamineral Green, Spirulina, Hemp Oil, Kelp Granules, and maca.

Also taken: NCD, Vitalzym, MSM, Antioxidant Extreme, and water.

Rainoshek’s Daily Tips:

Bill Maher says “the answer is spinach” Add spinach to your juices, yum yum yum. John Heinerman says: “Worried about wrinkles? Try this Elixir” He also shares about this dark leafy green that Fran R., a midwife who has a practice based on a lifetime of experience, says that she recommends spinach and spinach juice to newly pregnant moms to help them minimize the risks attached to child birth. She has discovered that both spinach and its juice helps to reduce the incidence of birth defects and miscarriages dramatically. Fran says “All I know is that the spinach works. Those who take the spinach regularly have more normal births, less problems you know.” Fran recommends three to four helpings of spinach or 3 glasses of spinach juice a week “is what seems to do the trick in preventing them birth accidents.”

Spinach juice is also good for:
Anemia (it has adequate levels of iron which can help alleviate some of the problems associated with anemia),
Fatigue (after a woman’s period, her iron levels drop which can lead to fatigue. Spinach juice diluted with an equal amount of carrot or tomato will provide sufficient iron to boost women’s energy levels)
and Wrinkles! (OK, so this isn’t a juice to drink but see if you are inspired to give this Heinerman trick a try. Soak some cotton balls or a cotton cloth in spinach juice, and rub in a circular motion around the corners of the eyes, across the forehead, around the corners of the mouth, and down the chin. Do this for five minutes upon getting up in the morning and before retiring at night. Afterwards, rinse the face with cold water and then rub in some persimmon or pomegranate juice using the same technique. According to Heinerman, this procedure will help to tighten the skin and get rid of about 40-60% of existing wrinkles!)

Personal Journal:

I am so in love with my juices!! I love making them, the meditation of chopping, blending, squeezing, and then the glowing jars of vibrating juices, so alive with goodness. I love drinking them, and look forward to each swallow, I anticipate my juice with excitement!

I should let you know that yesterday wound down to being a difficult yet transformative day for both David and I. We wore brave faces until around 3 o’clock when we both admitted that the day was feeling very tough, and that we were both craving food like MAD! We both also had very powerful emotional breakthroughs and by night fall did not feel hungry any more, and felt at peace once again.

We received the news of a death of someone we both knew, a very beautiful and strong soul who had battled cancer for almost 9 years when he discovered Juice Feasting. He gave it a very dedicated effort last year, and two months ago, after almost 10 years of living with cancer, he passed away. We send his family our deepest blessings and love.

We came face to face with the fact that there is not always "the solution" for each and every one of us. Sometimes the solution is to love what is. We all come from different pathways, and our pathways all lead different directions, sometimes we have to embrace death and flow into that final walk of life.

I also had yet another transformation of my personal past, shedding layers one by one, they are falling away like gauze peeled away from a wound slowly healing, and almost ready to see the sunshine. Sometimes I think the layers are all gone, and I think indeed we do experience a freedom from layers at times as they get burned away in our brightest moments of joy and bliss. Then they seem to recover, and re-bury the gold of our pure heart again, calling for action to mindfully peal them away again, putting them aside.

It can be such a delicate balance of acknowledging the shadow and filling the mind with beautiful thoughts. On the one had we don’t want to bury the sadness by ignoring it and pushing it deeper, and we also don’t want to indulge the pain body by dwelling in thoughts that cause us pain. Sometimes I get lost in how to do it all, but it all seems to come out clean and sparkling in the end!! Oh happy day! I spent a good hour journaling last night, and find such amazing answers there in my black book. Not only cathartic, but my writing seems to take the tangle of thoughts and smooth them out into a nice even thread, like taking a mess of fleece and creating not only the spool of wool, but then weaving it into a beautiful tapestry!

I have also been re-inspired to get more intimate with my dumbbells, both by Terilynn and Tony Kay. Muscle is magical. For those of you worried about how your body is going to act post-Juice Feast please please get serious about exercise! I have never really been a serious as I could be about this important nutrient since going raw, and I think now is the time. Exercise is the golden key. As Happy Oasis says, we are “EXERCISEARIANS” and it is one of the most important gifts you can give yourself! Muscle is the tissue of youth, it burns calories, it is spiritual baby!

Have a beautiful evening dear juicies,

LOVE!!

Katrina and David Rain

And here are some Day 29 Photos, we are on the eve of our 1 month Juice Feasting anniversary!!

Happy Katrina about to have some juice.
MMMMmmmm the amazing orange, watermelon, lemon and cherry juice! (I just did a workout so I am allowed to have it with out greens...I think!)
I think I like it!
Want some?
It is really good!
OK, I'll drink it myself then!
